Excess energy from the industrial sector provides heating to buildings and various facilities in Mo i Rana. |
Refuse and waste products from one enterprise are often utilised as a resource by neighbour enterprises. Nearly all scrap iron in Norway is melted down, cast and rolled into reinforcing steel at Mo i Rana. Other recycled materials include slag, dust from sewage treatment plants, fire bricks, forging scales, lime dust, etc.
The Rana region has high mountains, glaciers, much precipitation and therefore enormous amounts of hydro-power that is utilised for local value-creation. Much of the energy is recycled several times. Heat, cooling water and gases are recycled and utilised in the Industrial Park or in the city.
Remote Heating and Fish Farming
Mo Fjernvarme manages a remote heating facility that services the park and downtown Mo i Rana. The pedestrian-only shopping lanes downtown are kept free of snow and ice during the winter while the bathing, football and sports facilities at Moheia are heated with excess energy from the smelting plant and rolling mill. Heat, oxygen and massive amounts of mountain water is also utilised for fish farming in the park. Fish farming is an area for future focus.
NOK 700 Million set aside for environmental initiatives
Since the reorganization of the iron works around 1990, the enterprises of Mo Industrial Park have invested approximately NOK 700 Million in new treatment plants, sanitation of depots, green zones, monitoring of air and water quality and other environmental measures. Emissions and discharge have been drastically reduced. Environmental improvements will continue.
