The independently verified declaration shows that reinforcing steel produced by 7 Steel Nordic Manufacturing has a carbon footprint of 183 kg CO₂-equivalents per tonne of steel, compared with the European average of approximately 690 kg CO₂-equivalents per tonne, according to the World Steel Association.

This means that emissions from production in Mo i Rana are around 70 percent lower than the European average.

According to the company, these results are the direct outcome of long-term efforts in circular production, technological improvements and, above all, the unique industrial collaboration within Mo Industrial Park.

“The new EPD documents measurable improvements in both our production processes and our value chain. These are not theoretical calculations or emissions reductions on paper. The figures reflect the impact of concrete measures we have implemented over time and confirm that sustainability and competitiveness can go hand in hand,” says Halvard Meisfjord, Sales and Marketing Director.

A Unique Advantage in Mo Industrial Park

The main reasons why 7 Steel Nordic Manufacturing produces sustainable reinforcing steel are its use of recycled steel scrap as the primary raw material, electric arc furnace technology powered by renewable hydropower, and the close collaboration between companies within Mo Industrial Park.

Through industrial symbiosis, 7 Steel utilizes resources that would otherwise be wasted. One key example is the use of CO gas generated during Ferroglobe’s silicon and ferrosilicon production. Although this gas is a by-product of Ferroglobe’s manufacturing process, it serves as a valuable energy source in 7 Steel’s operations.

“Being part of Mo Industrial Park gives us opportunities that very few steel producers in Europe have. This is the circular economy in practice,” says Meisfjord.

“The green transition is not only about new technology. It is also about using resources more intelligently and creating value chains where energy, materials and by-products are shared across industries. That is exactly what we do in Mo Industrial Park.”

Meisfjord believes the industrial symbiosis in Mo Industrial Park is an excellent example of how the industry of the future must evolve, in line with the ambitions of the Paris Agreement. Globally, the steel industry has seen an overall negative trend in CO₂ emissions, largely because an increasing share of steel production has been relocated to—or expanded in—countries with significantly higher emission levels than those found in Europe.

From Scrap to New Steel

Production at 7 Steel Nordic Manufacturing is based entirely on recycled steel scrap. Through its circular value chain, discarded steel products are transformed into new reinforcing steel with a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional steelmaking based on iron ore.

The new EPD also documents several additional improvements:

Increased recycling and recovery of by-products.

Higher utilization of hot charging.

Improved reporting and documentation of by-products reused in production.

Greater resource efficiency through an increasingly circular value chain.

Further emissions reductions achieved through continuous optimization of production processes.

The company emphasizes that the updated EPD provides a more accurate picture of its actual environmental impact while documenting improvements achieved through continuous development of its production processes.

Important Documentation for Customers

The need for verified environmental data is becoming increasingly important throughout the construction industry. EPDs are now widely used as the basis for carbon accounting, public procurement and sustainability reporting.

The updated declaration therefore provides customers with current, third-party verified documentation to support the selection of lower-carbon construction materials.

“Our customers are requesting increasingly detailed environmental documentation. With the new EPD, we can demonstrate how a circular value chain—based on recycled raw materials, renewable energy and resource sharing across industries—delivers measurable results. This helps our customers reduce their own emissions while strengthening their competitiveness,” says Meisfjord.

A Model for the Industry of the Future

According to 7 Steel, the new EPD confirms that genuine emissions reductions are achieved through innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement—not through theoretical accounting methods or shifting emissions between different stakeholders.

For the company, the documentation also demonstrates the value of the circular industrial model that has been developed within Mo Industrial Park over several decades.

“Our journey is one of continuous improvement. The new EPD shows where we are today, but also where we are heading. By further developing our circular value chain and strengthening cooperation with our industrial partners, we will continue reducing emissions while reinforcing steel’s position as a sustainable construction material for the future,” says Meisfjord.

The updated EPD therefore confirms that 7 Steel is not only producing steel with a low carbon footprint. It also demonstrates how industrial collaboration, efficient resource utilization and circular business models can deliver tangible results in the green transition.

Industrial symbiosis and circular production deliver emissions far below the European average. 7 Steel has published a new and updated Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) documenting the company’s environmental performance.
