Norway must act before the consequences become permanent
27 January, 2026 11:02 Del DelThe EU has now adopted safeguard measures on ferroalloys. The decision passed by the narrowest of margins, yet the consequences for Norwegian land-based industry remain serious. Here in Mo Industripark, we feel this especially strongly. We host companies that are directly affected by the decision.
While certain details in the scheme offer some grounds for optimism, the overall picture remains unchanged. These measures are unwelcome. They restrict market access and increase uncertainty for an industry that is already navigating extremely challenging conditions. They cast a shadow over Norway’s ferroalloy sector and make the work of securing jobs and competitiveness far more difficult.
Perhaps most worrying is the risk that this marks the beginning of something larger. When the EU opens the door to protectionist measures against products from an EEA country, it risks setting a precedent that could spread to other sectors. That could affect industries that form the very core of the Norwegian mainland economy. For communities like Mo i Rana, where industry anchors employment and value creation, the risk is real.
This is why Norway must now respond swiftly and clearly. Our authorities must first clarify how these measures relate to the EEA Agreement and, if necessary, take the case into a formal process with the EU. At the same time, the government must consider national measures to ensure that industry is not left alone to absorb the consequences of reduced market access and rising costs. Targeted support, tools that maintain activity and conditions that provide time for adaptation must be assessed closely together with industry.
The situation calls for decisive action and for Norway to lean on the strengths we already possess. This is not only about export figures or industrial output, but about industrial towns, jobs and entire communities. The EU has made its decision. Now Norway must make its own.
Yet even in a period marked by uncertainty and tough external conditions, we continue to see innovation, investment and progress here in Mo Industripark. Our companies do not stand still. They grow, they adapt and they take bold steps forward. It is important to highlight this work and remind ourselves of everything being built here every single day.
